Should I Repair or Replace My Old Air Conditioner at This Point in the Summer?
Tired of dealing with AC issues in peak summer heat? We get it. Breakdowns can make your home uncomfortable and can start to eat into your home improvement budget.
You might be asking yourself: “Is my system worth repairing again, or is it finally time to bite the bullet and replace it?”
It’s a question homeowners often ask us. We work with our customers to make an informed decision based on timing, budget, and system performance. Here’s what to consider:
System Age
The first thing to think about is your system’s age. The typical lifespan of an HVAC system is 10-15 years. Naturally, old systems break down more often and are less efficient.
Another issue with older systems is outdated refrigerant. Earlier this year, an Environmental Protection Agency mandate took effect that requires the phasing out of older forms of refrigerants due to their ozone-depleting effects. If your system fails and requires the restricted forms of refrigerant, replacement may be your best option, as the outdated refrigerant is no longer in production.
System Repair History
Another consideration is your system’s recent repair history. Do you have your HVAC provider on speed dial for issues? Do you consistently struggle with things like energy bill spikes, short cycling, uneven cooling, odd noises and smells, or high indoor humidity?
Consider what you’ve spent on repair costs for the last couple of years. Frequent repairs may be putting a band-aid on a problem that can’t be fixed.
Facing a repair bill of 50% or more than the price of a new unit? It's probably time to replace it.
Another financial consideration is the long-term savings of a new system. Improved efficiency means you’ll pay less on your energy bills over time.
Timing
Late summer can feel like a tricky time to make a big decision based on your cooling system, but a new system will bring comfort and energy savings for the remainder of the warm months. If your heating system is on the older side, timing might not matter as much, since you’d benefit from the efficiency of a new system year-round.
When considering whether to repair or replace, it’s critical to take your time considering your system’s age, repair history, maintenance costs, and the timing of the replacement.
