Dealing with Low Water Pressure? 5 Possible Causes & What to Check First

Struggling with low water pressure? You're not alone. Many homeowners notice it first in the shower, then at the kitchen sink; a small annoyance that's easy to brush off. But while low water pressure can have a simple fix, it can also signal a bigger plumbing problem.

Low Water Pressure Indicators

  • Faucets/showerheads: Weaker water flow than usual

  • Appliances: Cycles take longer than usual

Potential Cause #1: Clogged Faucet/Showerhead

Mineral buildup can restrict water flow in faucets and showerheads. To check for this issue, remove and inspect the aerators on your faucet or showerheads. You want to look for visible buildup or debris.

Solution: Soak the aerators in vinegar to dissolve the mineral deposits, then rinse and reinstall them. You could also replace the aerators entirely. This should be done every 1-2 years anyway!

Potential Cause #2: Partially Closed Valves

If you’ve had recent plumbing repairs or maintenance, your shut-off valve may have been left partially closed, which may reduce water pressure throughout your home.

Solution: Check your main shut-off valve and any fixture-specific shut-off valves.

Potential Cause #3: Sneaky Leaks

If water is leaking from your pipes, this can reduce the pressure you see at your plumbing fixtures. Take note of higher-than-normal water bills, as well as damp spots, mold, and musty smells. If you can hear running water when nothing is on, that’s another red flag!

Solution: Call a plumber if you suspect a leak!

Potential Cause #4: Pipe Corrosion or Buildup

It is common for older pipes to corrode or clog internally. Signs of this include a gradual loss of water pressure and/or discolored water.

Solution: Call a plumber for a professional inspection to determine whether your pipes are the issue!

Potential Cause #5: Pressure Regulator Problem

If you have a faulty pressure regulator, you may notice low or inconsistent water pressure. If you’re seeing a sudden drop in pressure in all your fixtures, it may be your regulator.

Solution: Call a plumber for a professional diagnosis!

While many pressure issues have easy fixes, a persistent pressure problem is something you should address as soon as possible. The earlier you catch it, the more you can do to prevent a major (and costly!) repair.
