Spring Allergies Acting Up? Your HVAC Might Be Part of the Problem

Spring has arrived in Charlottesville! Unfortunately, for many of us, that means allergy season is in full swing. If you notice that your allergy symptoms are oddly worsening indoors, your HVAC system could be the culprit.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, people spend, on average, 90% of their time indoors, and indoor levels of some pollutants are often several times higher than outdoor levels.

If neglected, your HVAC system can circulate and trap allergens, leading to sneezing, congestion, watery eyes, and more. Here’s what to look out for, and when to call a professional.

How Your HVAC System Spreads Allergens

Your system is designed to pull in air and distribute it throughout your home. Some allergens that often get trapped and recirculated are:

  • Pollen (worse in the spring!)

  • Dust mites

  • Mold spores

  • Pet dander

Indoor Allergy Culprits

  • Clogged or Unsuitable Filters: Once a filter becomes clogged or dirty, it stops catching particles and starts releasing them. That’s why it’s important to check your filters often (at least every 90 days). Change it as soon as you notice buildup and discoloration! For allergy sufferers, we recommend an air filter with a MERV rating of 11-13.

  • Dirty Air Ducts: Over the winter, your air ducts accumulate dust and mold - it’s unavoidable! Older homes are especially prone to this problem. If you see visible dust buildup in your ducts or notice a musty odor, it’s probably time to have them checked.

  • Mold/Moisture in the System: Certain parts of your HVAC system (such as evaporator coils) are prone to mold. If you notice a musty smell when your system kicks on, you might have a mold issue on your hands. If left unaddressed, these mold spores will spread throughout your living areas. However, a routine maintenance check can help you flag this potential issue before it becomes a real problem.

  • Neglected Annual Maintenance: Speaking of routine maintenance, skipping a spring tune-up can mean allergen buildup in your system goes unnoticed throughout the spring and early summer months. A simple inspection will go a long way to improve your family’s indoor air quality!
